St Mark UMC’s Black History Month Speaker Series

Throughout Black History Month, St. Mark UMC is welcoming several special guests. On Feb. 9, the congregation welcomed Richard Wilder to give a presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers and their contributions here in Florida.

The Buffalo Soldiers were African American regiments formed after the Civil War, serving in the U.S. Army. In Florida, they were important during the Reconstruction era and into the early 20th century. They took part in military actions such as the Seminole Wars and the Spanish-American War, helping to keep the peace, protect settlers, and interact with Indigenous groups. Their duties included guarding railroads and telegraph lines, which aided the expansion of the American frontier.

Despite facing racism and discrimination, the Buffalo Soldiers gained a reputation for their discipline and bravery, excelling in horseback riding and marksmanship. Besides military work, they contributed to Florida's community development through road building and town establishment.

Throughout February, St. Mark UMC is hosting its “Celebrating Our Heritage” Speaker series.

Other guest speakers include: Professor Juli McShay on Feb. 16, and Lt. Col. Terry Coney, President of the Lakeland Chapter of the NAACP on Feb. 23.

Service begins at 11 a.m.
